Filing a tax return as a temporary worker

Monday 29 March 2021

It's tax return time again. Do you work as a temp? We have listed a number of frequently asked questions for you.

How do I know if I need to file a tax return?

If you have received a tax return letter from the tax authorities, a tax return is mandatory. You will receive this letter by post and on mijn.overheid.nl, in January or February.

Can I be fined if I do not file a tax return?

Yes, you can. So it is definitely worth filing a tax return, even if you expect little or no money back from the tax authorities.
There is an attack limit. If it turns out that you have to repay less than € 45, - you will be waived.

Have you not received a tax return letter, or have you lost it?

You can fill in a form on mijn.belastingdienst.nl, which is called 'request provisional assessment'. It might be smart to do that. Sometimes you are also obliged to file a tax return if you have not received a tax return letter, and you may know that you have to pay additional tax. You must then file a declaration of your own accord.

When do you have to pay tax?

For example, if you have a lot of possessions or savings, or if you have earned more than € 6000 with a job from which no wage tax has been deducted. Or if you had several employers at the same time, and a tax discount (payroll tax credit) was granted in several places.

When must my declaration be submitted?

From 1 March you have two months to submit your income tax return. The completed version must be received before 1 May. The deadline used to be April 1. It may be smart to send in before April 1. Because if you get money back from the tax authorities, you will certainly have it in your account before July 1.

What if you work for more employers?

If you are going to work somewhere, you fill in on your payroll tax statement whether a payroll tax credit should be applied. You will then have more net salary. Ultimately, you can only get that discount from one employer. If you have completed this for several employers, you must repay. If you work as a temporary worker through one temporary employment agency , this applies as one employer, and there is nothing to worry about. If you have several short jobs in succession, you can always apply for a payroll tax credit.
