3 basic ingredients for your dream job

15 February 2018 -

Are you also looking for that job that really suits you? Een place where you can get started and flourish based on your interests? Many people know they want something different, but they don't know exactly what.   Actief Werkt! gives 3 tips with which you can determine what your dream job is.

1. Know who you are and what your strengths are

It seems obvious, but finding a job that suits you starts with discovering what really interests you, what your passions are, what is important to you, what your strengths are and where you want to grow in the longer term.

Questions that can help you with this are:

  • What were the moments in my life when I was completely in my element?

  • Which activities do I enjoy doing and where do I experience the most growth?

  • What was I most interested in as a child? What made me curious?

2. Which aspects of a subject do you find interesting?

After considering who you are, what your passions and what your strengths are, comes the next step. Namely the question: what makes a position, job or profession interesting for you?

When you're thinking about a career switch, barriers like education, retraining and the time it takes can really discourage you from taking the step. For example, if you are a web developer, but you actually find the field of law very interesting, you can be held back by the idea that you have to study for 8 years to have all the knowledge in-house. And thus, you may not take action to do what you really want to. In that case you could ask yourself: “What do I find so interesting about the profession of law?”. Perhaps it is the human and social aspect, advising, doing in-depth research, being able to mean something to others or just making a plea that really appeals to you.

These aspects of the subject may also be reflected in a subject that is closer to your own field. It helps enormously to ask for feedback from people around you to find out.

3. Enable your network

Talk about it with people in your area, this will give you a lot of insight into what is possible. Friends, family, acquaintances and neighbors often have a large network. They can help you gain insight into what functions actually exist and what you can search for.

Want to take it a step further in exploring what your dream job looks like? Then talk to someone who is in the field. Een network conversation or maybe even a half-day walk with such a person can make it more concrete for yourself whether that dream position actually fits your expectations.
