Checklist: 7 things that should not be missing on your resume

29 May 2018 -

When you apply, do you use a resume? Creating a resume takes some effort, but it will help you if you're looking for a job. And if you put in the time once, then you have a foundation with which you can go for a long time.   To make you look good, we would like to list seven indispensable parts for you that will make your CV complete. Also useful to use as a checklist!

1. Good photo

Are you wondering whether a photo is a good addition to a resume? We say: do it! Don't you remember someone much better when you have a face to it? In addition, a professional photo may actually help you find your dream job. You can read how to take a good photo in our previous blog: DIY: 6 tips for a professional photo . Not all professional photos have to be boring. For example, are you going to work with animals? Then you can have a nice photo with your puppy. In other words: make sure that your photo matches the career you want.

2. Contact details

Your contact details are of course very important. Een recruiter or an employer needs to know how to reach you. Check whether you have at least the following information on your resume:

  • Your first and last name (preferably at the top of your resume, so that the recruiter can easily find you)
  • Your address
  • Your date of birth
  • Your telephone number
  • Your email address (use a representative email address)

You can also choose to include your driver's license or website on your resume. Also make sure that your details are always up-to-date when you apply for a job.

3. Een profile sketch

It is advisable to write a little bit about yourself on your resume in a few short lines. For example, this could be your motto in combination with your work experience and skills. Think about your ambitions and don't forget to include a personal part of yourself: what distinguishes you from others and what really makes you you?

A profile sketch is most powerful with your profile photo, so people immediately have a good idea of you and your resume gets a personal touch. Tip: do you already have a LinkedIn profile ? Then you have probably already added a profile sketch to the intro/summary. You can also use your LinkedIn profile on your resume, if you have one.

4. Combine your work experience

It is possible that you have had quite a few different jobs in a short time. Do you find it difficult to keep an overview here? Or are they simply too many jobs to name separately on your resume? Then you can choose to combine work experience.

For example, that from 2016 to 2018 you have gained experience with various clients via Actief Werkt! . As a packer, order picker and forklift driver.   This way you can combine work experience through a single employment agency and prevent ambiguities from arising on your resume. You can also combine work experience in a particular industry.   This way your resume remains clear and you can still name a lot of work experience.

5. Education and courses

Your education should also not be missing from your CV. State the name of your school, your diploma (obtained/not yet obtained), the duration of your study and of course your field of study. Did you do something important during your training in the form of a project or an assignment - mention this as well. Who knows, maybe that one project will be the deciding factor.

6. Knowledge and skills

Also add your knowledge and skills. In your profile you have already indicated what you excel in, but it is also good to name it separately and extensively. With this you also underline your profile, as it were. Do you speak certain languages or do you always know how to keep your cool? Describe what you have and what makes you unique.

7. References

Have you worked somewhere where they were super happy with you? Then you can ask them to give you a reference. Your employer will then write down his satisfaction with your work. For example, quote the positive words of your former supervisor and add the following; the name of who said this, position of that person, the name of the company and when you worked there. This of course makes a very good impression and strengthens your resume!

Bonus tips:

Do you create your CV yourself, for example in a program such as Word? Make sure you have a clear layout with enough white space and clear headings. Don't make your resume longer than two A4 pages, because recruiters don't have the time (and no desire) to go through an entire book - no matter how proud you are of it. Also have someone else check your CV: four eyes see more than two. Een small spelling error is fixed in no time. Is everything right? Then save your resume and you are ready-to-go.
