Don't forget to put in your earplugs

Do you recognize that too? Have you been to a great concert and your ears are bothering you the next few days? Hearing protection is necessary to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. And not only during concerts, but certainly also at work. Poor hearing can lead to serious social and medical consequences.

What are the risks of working without hearing protection

Noise-induced hearing loss occurs when the sound level (volume) in the ear canal is too high, regardless of whether this sound sounds nice or is perceived as noise. As a rule of thumb, if it is not possible to have a conversation with someone within a radius of one meter without raising your voice, there is a risk of developing noise-induced hearing loss. If the sound is too loud, you run the risk of noise-induced hearing loss. Deafness and ringing in the ears (tinnitus) can be consequences of prolonged exposure to loud noise.

Some tips for the workplace

1. Choose the right hearing protection:
There are different types of hearing protectors available, such as earplugs, earmuffs and custom earplugs. Choose the type that best suits the noise level and nature of the work.

2. Ensure a good fit:
Make sure the hearing protection fits properly. Een good sealing is crucial for effective sound insulation.

3. Maintain hearing protection:
Check regularly for cracks, dents or other damage. Replace worn or damaged hearing protectors immediately. Clean the hearing protectors regularly. Follow the instructions: Read and follow the usage instructions supplied with the hearing protection. This may include information on how to install and maintain them.

4. Use hearing protection consistently:
Always wear hearing protection when necessary, even if the noise only occurs temporarily. Repeated exposure to noise can cause cumulative damage.

5. Provide variety:
If work permits, rest your ears occasionally, especially if they are exposed to noise for long periods.

6. Increase awareness:
Advise colleagues who are not wearing protection about the risks of noise and the need for hearing protection. Awareness can contribute to a culture of safety in the workplace.

Do you see a colleague working on the work floor without hearing protection? Be alert and help each other. It would be a shame if you developed hearing problems early on and were less able to enjoy music in your spare time. Safety first!
