Locking out, bullying and intimidation in the workplace

26 October 2021 -

What do you think of when you think of 'working safely'? Perhaps mainly to protective equipment or rules? This is certainly a large part of the 'safe working' principle. But this also includes feeling emotionally and/or mentally safe in the workplace. That feeling of safety is jeopardized if there is room in the workplace for undesirable behavior.
Every day thousands of flex colleagues and professionals work for us. We find it extremely important that they can work safely, both physically and emotionally.

Discrimination, bullying and intimidation

'Undesirable manners' is a broad term. What do we mean by it? When your colleagues are guilty of discrimination, bullying or (sexual) intimidation. In practice it turns out to be a difficult subject: when is something a joke, when is there more to it? And who are responsible, those who take an active role, or also those who see it happen but do nothing?
What we know for sure is that the consequences of undesirable behavior in the workplace are significant. First of all, of course, for those who experience psychological problems as a result, but also for productivity and continuity within a company. When the atmosphere is bad, people call in sick more often or look for another job. Everyone is worse off in a corporate culture where bullying occurs.

What can you do about undesirable behaviour?

Do you feel safe in the workplace? It is not always easy to sound the alarm, but it is very important. Talking is an important first step. It is often a huge relief to be able to tell your story. Do you work as a temporary worker? Then you can always tell your story to your contact person at the employment agency. But it is also important that you tell your story to the company where you work. Your contact person at the employment agency can help you with this. You can also contact our confidential adviser.

In the coming weeks we will share more tips and information on this topic. For example, we provide tips for victims of undesirable behaviour, but we also provide tips for supervisors, employers, or colleagues of victims of bullying and intimidation. Do you have questions about this? Then be sure to ask your contact person at Actief Werkt! or Actief Techniek .
