On the road in the snow? This is useful to know.

22 January 2019 - Silvie van den Berg

It's time! It's finally winter in Nederland . It makes for nice pictures, that's for sure. But if you have to go to work by car, you may still be faced with a challenge. With our info you keep the right!

Working in the cold

When there's ice on the road

Have you ever experienced it?   You are driving calmly on a road in winter conditions, everything seems under control, but suddenly you lose your grip and your car starts to slide. Help... of course you're scared. The trick is to stay calm and not take any unexpected actions. So don't turn your steering wheel or apply the brakes, but adjust slowly and brake carefully until you are off the icy part of the road.

dark places

Do you see dark spots on a slippery road? That could mean there's ice.

Braking in a bend

In normal weather conditions you will often slow down in a bend. On snow it is safest to slow down first and then make the turn.   It's a bit like walking on ice. Small steps and don't try to run.

Winter tires

Do you have winter tires?   In snow and ice you are often better off with winter tires, but not always. So don't worry too much if you don't have winter tires. At temperatures above zero, summer tires have even slightly more grip on snowy roads than winter tires. Winter tires are only safer at sub-zero temperatures.

In a slip

Here it gets a bit more complicated. Is your car skidding? Sometimes running is the motto, and sometimes not. Stay calm and try to feel what works to get a better grip. If the rear of your car is about to slip, it can help to accelerate a little and steer in the direction you want to go. With rear-wheel drive, the tip is to gently release or disengage the throttle.

Look where you want to go

Are you in a slip, and do you see that ditch coming towards you? Keep your cool. You now tend to look at that ditch, but unconsciously you steer in the direction you are looking. So look away and focus on where you do want to go.

Safe journey!
