On the way we are offline

28 March 2022 -

In the car, on the bicycle or on the scooter, using the telephone behind the wheel can lead to life-threatening situations. This applies to those who use the telephone, but also to other road users. Why do we still use our telephone in traffic? You want to be reachable and not miss anything. It is very tempting to check your smartphone, even while driving or cycling. And yet: we all know that using your smartphone while driving is a life-threatening combination…. With that information, that one message could really wait a while, until you reach your destination!

60% of the Dutch use their telephone in the car, while more than 90% of the Dutch consider the use of a mobile phone in the car dangerous (Interpolis study).   Below are a few tips to make sure you're really offline on the road:

  • Put your phone on silent and (if possible) out of sight;
  • Use Apple's 'Do not disturb while driving' feature, or Samsung's 'In traffic Reply' app;
  • Navigating from your phone? Use a phone holder for in the car or on the bike;
  • Be well prepared for the road; for example, make sure you have set up the navigation before you leave. If you experience navigation problems while driving, stand in a parking lot to reset your navigation.
  • Is someone driving? Ask your fellow passenger to install the navigation app or write an app if it really can't wait;
  • Call hands-free only. So make sure your bluetooth settings are correct or call via the speaker if your phone is on a stand;
  • Use the AutoModus app. With various tools, this app ensures that you no longer use your mobile phone while driving, while you can use your navigation. For example, Interpolis donates 50 cents for every 100 kilometers you drive in AutoModus to a charity that you can choose: Traffic Nederland , The Food Bank or Kika.
