The 5 biggest job application blunders

22 maart 2018 -

Blunders in the workplace: everyone experiences them. But you can also make a major blunder during the application procedure. And then that is of course less pleasant. To protect you from the potential 'failures' that lurk, we would like to tell you what the 5 biggest (and most common) job application blunders are.

1. Forgot the interviewer's name

A blunder that we experience much more often than you might think: people who have forgotten the name of their interlocutor. Sometimes this comes from disinterest, but often it's just a matter of nerves. This creates a very annoying situation when you have to indicate at the desk who you have an appointment with. So make sure you check the interviewer's name just before you enter the company.

2. Wrong day or time

Even people who really always show up on time can still make a mistake about the date and time of an interview. While this is precisely the appointment where you do not want to experience this. Also in this case, the nerves can take the upper hand, even beforehand. Een difficult situation, because in this way you will unfortunately not leave a good impression on your potential employer. So make a clear note of the correct date and time in your calendar when making the appointment.

Job Mistakes

3. No knowledge about the position

Do you have many job interviews in a short period of time? Then it is important to have a good idea of which company it is your turn to work with. Of course you will get all the necessary information on the spot, but with some basic knowledge about the position and the company you will make an even better impression. So read the vacancy text carefully and take a look at the website, for example. It often happens that the applicant accidentally describes another position or another company... a major application blunder!

4. A little too personal...

When you're comfortable in a job interview, you can be yourself completely. Especially when you have a good click with your conversation partner. However, depending on the position, it is important to remain professional. Talking about your private life is fine, but think carefully about what impression you want to leave. This also applies to your image on the internet: make sure that you also convey a good image of yourself on social media. And of course we don't have to tell you, but   flirting is of course   not done.   If you expect to get a job that way, you are guaranteed to make a blunder.

5. Een negative setting

You will never go into a job interview with the intention of complaining. But when the interviewer asks about your experience with your previous job, it may trigger some negative feelings. You don't have to paint the situation any rosier than it is, but make sure you don't start complaining about your old employer. That way you don't leave a positive impression.   You can, however, name what you would like to see different in your new job. This way you avoid a job application blunder.
