Tips for your online job interview

17 November 2020 -

During this time, your job interview may well take place online. That can present an extra challenge, but with our tips you will get through it. On to that new job!

An online job interview is very efficient. You don't have to go anywhere, you don't get stuck in traffic and you can always find it. But especially if you don't have that much experience with it yet, it can also cause extra tension. We'll give you some tips that will help you approach your interview with more confidence and land you that job!

1. Teams, Zoom, Skype or Whatsapp?

The technique is the foundation! If you don't get any surprises there, you can focus on the rest. Which tool is used for your online job interview? It is smart if you consider in advance whether you are using your phone or your computer. And do you install the app? Or do you just go to your job interview via the web? You will receive this information from the employer you are interviewing with. Also think about the sound beforehand. Do you use earphones? With a Bluetooth connection?   , but if you think about it in advance and make preparations, you will start your conversation much more calmly.

2. Practice

In addition, practice beforehand! Ask a friend or family member to help you.  You will then find out in time if something is not quite right with image or sound, and you will know how it works by the time you have your real job interview.

3. Check your internet connection

If you're caught off guard by a bad connection during your conversation, that's a real showstopper!   Sit somewhere where you have a strong Wi-Fi signal, or use 4G if you're using your phone.

4. Focus

Do you work on your computer? Then close all other tabs and put your phone on silent. Do you use your phone? Then turn off your Whatsapp notifications and stop incoming calls. This way you keep your focus on the conversation.

5. Choose your clothes as if it were a real job interview

Just like with a 'normal' job interview, the tip is: think about what clothes you wear. Even though you tend to stay in your comfy outfit, if that doesn't suit the company you're applying for, it's not recommended.

6. Watch your posture

During a video call, your conversation partner automatically pays more attention to you than during a face-to-face conversation. There are just fewer distractions. That's why nonverbal cues say even more. So pay attention to your attitude. Don't slump, but don't sit too cramped either. It is difficult to sit actively in an easy chair, but you don't necessarily have to sit at a desk either. It also depends a bit on the position you are applying for and what suits you. You can also test this, try in advance how you feel comfortable in an active posture.

7. Eye Contact

You probably tend to look at your own image on the screen during the conversation. That only looks to your interlocutor as if you are looking away. The tip: to appear interested and make contact, look into the camera regularly.

8. Choose a quiet place

Choose the right place. Een place where you can sit quietly, where no children or animals are running around, where there is no noise in the background. This way you can focus on the conversation. But the background is also important. For yourself and for your interlocutor. Always check how the background looks through the eyes of the other person. Een quiet background ensures that your conversation partner remains focused on you.

9. Be on time

Make sure you are ready in plenty of time. If you run in at the last minute, just like in a real conversation, it makes for a messy and awkward start to the conversation. If you are ready on time, you can also participate immediately when your conversation partner starts the meeting. That feels so good for both of you.

10. Close well

Is the conversation over? Have agreements been made about the follow-up?   Then you can close the conversation. Een last important tip: only start yelling about how your job interview was to your roommate, when you are really sure that the connection has been lost.
