Your holiday money

4 January 2019 - Cato van Vliet

You accrue holiday pay every year. But how much is that? How is that amount determined and how is the payout scheme structured?

How much is your holiday pay?

Your holiday pay is at least 8% of your gross annual salary. This is calculated per year, for example from May 2017 to May 2018. The official term is 'holiday allowance'. If you are ill, the accrual of your holiday pay continues. Even if you work overtime and receive any overtime allowance for this, you will earn holiday pay for the hours worked.   Other payments, such as profit distributions and year-end bonuses are no longer included in the calculation.

The calculation

The collective labor agreement of your sector may state that you are not entitled to holiday allowance or another lower amount. You are then entitled to at least 108% of the minimum wage. If you only earn the minimum wage, then you are entitled to 8% holiday allowance on this wage.

Lower amount of holiday pay

Do you earn more than 3 times the minimum wage? Then your employer can draw up a written agreement stating that you will not receive holiday pay or a lower amount of holiday pay. If your wage falls, for example due to illness or leave, you will again accrue holiday allowance on that lower wage.

Holiday payout

Your employer pays your holiday pay at least once a year. The amount of this amount is stated on your pay slip. Usually this payout is in May or June. The exact agreements about this can be found in your employment contract or collective labor agreement.

At Actief Werkt!

Do you work through us as a flex colleague? Then you can have your holiday pay paid out in the meantime. You must take at least 1 week of vacation for this.
