What does your day look like as a Baggage Handler at Schiphol ?

It is important to mention that as a Baggage and Service employee you will not be removing suitcases from airplanes and placing them on the tires. This is done by an external party!

As a Baggage Operations Support (BOS) employee in the baggage department, your work consists of the following:

As a Service Employee you have various tasks. You will be trained on the floor to become an all-round BOS employee. As a BOS employee you have to deal with various tasks. You'll first need to learn how to read a suitcase label, which will get you started in the coding department. Once you understand how the labels are read, take a look at odd-size. Once you have mastered this well, you will grow into an all-round BOS employee. As an all-rounder you can be deployed anywhere. The tasks are listed below:

  • If a passenger has lost their luggage or the suitcase is not on the conveyor belt, you investigate and ensure that the correct lines are set out, so that the passenger knows when he can expect his suitcase back;
  • You ensure that all special types of luggage are checked in correctly, including golf bags, skis, etc.;
  • You enter this baggage into the relevant system and ensure that it ends up with the right handler;
  • If necessary, you move suitcases to different places on Schiphol , and ensure that they end up with the right handler (hence Driver's License B);
  • Finally, an important part of your work is coding suitcases. Suitcases arrive at the top and, for example, do not have the correct label or the label is missing or illegible. You will then scan this suitcase using a handheld scanner (or by manual entry) and the luggage will disappear back into the baggage system and end up with the right handler.

It is a service-oriented position, in principle not physically demanding work. But you work in the baggage cellar and there are malfunctions or problems surrounding Schiphol that compromise the baggage system, then you must be prepared to move suitcases.

What are the working hours?

You work in different shifts, see below how it is approximately divided (the shifts consist of 6 or 8 hours per shift):

  1. Morning shift has different start times, namely between 3:45 AM and 9:45 AM --> Service ends at 6:00 PM at the latest;
  2. The first starting time for the afternoon shift is 12:45 PM --> Service ends no later than 10:30 PM
  3. Evening/night shift is from 9:45 PM to 6:00 AM or 1:45 AM to 10:00 AM
